Bam! A ball goes rocketing through the air at high speed, clears the net and lands right on the line. The other team can only stare at it in shock. Haikyu!!, one of the most popular sport anime favored by many anime fans, is finally reaching the end of its animated adaptation. Its manga sales have exceeded 70 million copies and theater tickets surpassed 4.91 million sales.
Created by manga artist Haruichi Furudate, the series was originally made to promote volleyball during a time when interest in the sport was declining. The story focuses on personal growth, struggles, and the bonds formed within a team, featuring characters who are not naturally gifted, this allows audiences to connect with the characters as they improve over time. Unlike many sports that have many supernatural events or powers, Haikyu!!, was created to showcase realistic, attainable skills, and strategies which also makes each win seem more exciting and earned through hard work.
The anime follows the main character along with several other characters offering the viewer more different perspectives, although the anime evidently follows the main character, a boy named Hinata Shoyo, more than others. The main character, Hinata Shoyo, displays many traits that helped him rise and become better in the series, such as his persistence and belief in himself and others. Throughout the series fans see many teams and characters. Although the amount of characters are vast, each character has their own goal, motivation, and strengths. This benefits the story and storyline by moving the story forward since each character pushes the story forward with their goals and aspirations.
Throughout the series, fans see characters improve in areas such as teamwork, skills, and many more. Through team collaboration, bonds form throughout the anime, to the point where even opponents can become friends. The anime is not “just an anime” - it contains a variety of valuable lessons about important values that benefit people in real life.
In the series, it shows many teams, majorly following the Karasuno Volleyball Club, although many other schools are shown, such as Aoba Johsai (Seijoh), Nekoma, Inarizaki, Fukurundai, Shiratorizawa, and several others. Each team with its own motto, such as Nekoma’s motto, “Connect”, shows a single word that signifies their reliance on seamless teamwork, linking their offence and deffence, and building connections with other teams, especially Karasuno. Even Karasuno’s motto, “Fly”, symbolizes the team's untethered, aggressive, unpredictable playing style, representing their desire to break free from past limitations.
Overall, the anime consists of well animated characters that move dynamically, where the plot focuses on realism, emotions, and character development. The series is often praised for its detailed, dynamic volleyball action with the whole series being rated at 8.5 out of ten and individual episodes being able to reach 9.6 out of ten. Seasons one through three is praised for its fluid motions in animation and season four is noted to have an art style change where fans note that the art feels less consistent.
In the year 2024, 10 years after Haikyu!! first premiered, the episode, The Dumpster Battle, was premiered and it was highly regarded for its animation and pacing. As student Olivia Yin notes, “It's the silliest thing I’ve watched. It got me wheezing on my couch.” Similar to many fans, she notes that the anime has several humorous segments which greatly improved and benefited in making the series accessible to a broader audience beyond just sports fans. The humor, ranging from physical comedy to humorous dialogue, acts as a "buffer" that keeps the show entertaining even during slower training arcs.
Despite many of its strengths, Haikyu!! is not without flaws. Some fans feel that certain characters received less development compared to several other characters, especially as the cast continued to expand. While the anime certainly focuses on Hinata Shoyo and a few key characters are extremely effective in character development, supporting characters sometimes fade slowly into the background.
Additionally, many viewers have noted several differences between the manga and anime adaptation, particularly in the pacing and animation consistency during later seasons. While these changes do not significantly harm the storyline, the changes have sparked several big discussions among fans about missed moments that could have improved the entire anime overall.
Throughout the anime, it has its fair share of amazingly entertaining moments according to many fans, although many are also disappointed by the ending, a timeskip to the characters and their future jobs, the story contains numerous emotional moments too.
The jobs of several extremely popular characters include Kozume Kenma’s, who became a gaming youtuber and CEO of Bouncing Ball Corp. as fans had expected. One of the characters that took on one of the most surprising jobs is Kita Shinsuke, who became a rice farmer. Many fans initially expected Kita to become a successful volleyball player due to his skill level or land an extremely successful job due to his test scores in his high school years. Another character, whose job was cited as “surprising and disappointing” is Miya Osamu, who became an Onigri shop owner. Initially fans expected Osamu to go pro, playing alongside his brother Miya Atsumu due to Osamu widely known skills being one of the top high school players in the nation.
As the adapted versions of Haikyu!! comes to an end, many fans wish to see the timeskip segments animated and aired. As Production I.G. confirms, the release date is slated in 2027, same as Haikyu!! vs. The Little Giant, the final special anime, The Place Where Monsters Go is going to follow.
While its fanbase keeps on growing, the anime also continues to be finished animated. The series slowly gains more and more fans daily with its profits being able to achieve a profit of 125 million dollars worldwide also being the highest-grossing film of the 2024 box office year. The movie earned more than 15 million dollars in its first weekend opening in Japan. Ever since its first debut in Japan, Haikyu!! has dominated the box office, attracting 5.77 million theatergoers. With its achievements, Haikyuu!! achieves its title of one of the best sports anime.
